EU Tightens Allergen Labeling: Font Size Now Regulated
The European Commission has rolled out a new regulation mandating minimum font sizes for allergen declarations on packaged food labels, effective July 1, 2025.
This update aims to prevent allergic reactions by ensuring that consumers can clearly spot allergens without magnifying the fine print. The regulation specifically requires that allergen text be:
- In bold font
- At least 1.2mm in height (based on lowercase ‘x’ height)
- Clearly contrasted against the background
Why It Matters for Manufacturers
For food producers, this isn’t just a design tweak. It means:
- Rechecking packaging templates
- Realigning label printers
- And potentially redesigning multi-language labels
Failure to comply may result in fines, product recalls, or suspension from EU shelves.
